Fewer Applications in 2019 Admissions at DU: Here is why!
Mr. Samorendra Sigh, Deputy Dean of the Student Welfare Department of Delhi University has cited reasons like changed admission criteria, delay in application process opening, high cutoffs for the drop in applications in DU.
The overall admission applications in the University of Delhi (DU) in 2019 have seen a notable drop in numbers. The university has reported that 2.58 lakh applications have been received so far when the application portal closed on 22nd June 2019. The 2.58 applications are received for admissions in 62,000 seats were in the lesser number of the seats a previous year, the number of applications received was 2.78 lakh for 56,000 seats.
The Deputy Dean of the Student Welfare Department in the University of Delhi Mr. Samorendra Singh said that many of the CBSE students backed off from taking admissions in the university fearing the predictions of high cutoffs as more CBSE students scored 95% and above marks this year.
He added that the delay in the starting of the admission process is also a reason, wherein the previous year, the admission process started from 15th May, this year, the portal was opened on 30th May due to general parliamentary elections. This delay discouraged the students belonging from other states from applying to the University. Singh also informed that this year, there were various petitions signed against the changed eligibility criteria which made the High Court issue directives to the university to extend the application processes. The university later rolled back the new admission criteria and re-introduced the criteria of the previous 2018-19 academic year.
The rise the university witnessed this year is in the number of female candidate’s applications. Against 1.28 lakh male candidates applying for the admissions in UG courses in DU 1.29 female candidates' applications were received in the common application portal.
