Central Marine Fisheries Research institute (CMFRI) to Celebrate Platinum Jubilee
The inaugural session will take place at CMFRI Headquarters located In Cochin at 2:30 PM on February 18, 2017. Dr. J.K. Jena, Deputy Director General of ICAR, will preside over as the chief guest.
CMFRI or Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute has completed 70 years and is going to celebrate its platinum jubilee on February 18, 2017. The celebrations will take place throughout the year with various events. The platinum jubilee celebrations will be inaugurated by Governor of Kerala, Mr. P. Sathasivan.
The inaugural session will take place at CMFRI headquarters located in Cochin at 2:30 PM on February 18, 2017. Dr. J.K. Jena, Deputy Director General of ICAR, will preside over as the chief guest. The institute was established in the year 1947 as Marine Fisheries Research Station. Later, it joined hands with Indian Council for Agriculture and Research in the year 1967 and became CMFRI. It is one of the India’s leading marine fisheries institutes which has completed 70 years.

Since its inception, CMFRI has been playing a significant role in promoting and accomplishing research in marine fisheries. CMFRI played a crucial role in the areas of biodiversity studies, biotechnological applications of marine resources, coastal mariculture, sea farming and so on.

CMFRI has 15 regional centres which promote research. The regional centres are located in the following cities:-
- Mangalore
- Vizhinjam
- Tuticorin
- Karwar
- Calicut
- Chennai
- Mumbai
- Veraval
- Visakhapatnam
- Mandapam Camp
Apart from the 11 regional research centres, CMFRI also has 15 field centres which are located in coastal regions across the country. The institute played a significant role in providing livelihood to 40 lakh fisherfolks of the country.
