Centre Approves Setting Up of 70 New Model Colleges

The Centre has given itsapproval for setting up of 70 new model colleges all over the country. The HRD Ministry led meeting has further sanctioned an amount of Rs. 840 crore for the establishment of the new model colleges in India.

The sanction of funds has been done under the promising Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan - RUSA scheme of the central government. It is the flagship scheme of the HRD Ministry that aims to remodel the higher education institutions which are functioning in different states of the country.

The HRD ministry willset up new model colleges in states which are backward as compared to others and also have a low density of colleges. Out of all the states, the maximum number of colleges will be set up in Jharkhand i.e. 13 colleges, followed by 8 in Madhya Pradesh, 7 in Chhattisgarh and 6 in Odisha. The ministry will also set up five new model colleges each in Assam, Bihar, and Rajasthan and three of them in Jammu and Kashmir and others. Apart from that model colleges will also be set up in Raichur and Yadgir districts of Karnataka as per plan.

Further, five autonomous colleges in Karnataka have been selected for the grant of funds under the Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) to improve their quality of education, infrastructure, introduce research projects and work on institutional excellence. The colleges which have been selected for the grant are :

• St Agnes College in Dakshina Kannada district
• JSS College for Women in Mysuru
• St Aloysius College in Dakshina Kannada district
• ST. Philomena College in Mysuru
• Jyoti Nivas College in Bengaluru

Each of the colleges will be granted Rs. 5 crore to improve their infrastructure teaching and institutional excellence.
