The Delhi Government has sent a proposal basis which Principals and Registrars of colleges in the states will be authorised to issue driving license to students. Students studying in Delhi colleges will soon be able to obtain a learner's driving license from their college administration.

Since most of the individuals applying for a driving license (DL) are from the age group of 18 to 15 years, this initiative will help the government in limiting the crowd at RTO. With 53% of DL applicants in this age group, provision of learning license at colleges will be of great help.

The government will initially provide this facility from polytechnics colleges and colleges that fall under the administration of the Delhi government including 6 DU colleges. The facility will be provided by connecting the server of the college to the transport department with the help of Sarathi software.

Those willing to apply for a driving license will have to appear for an online test. All applicants will have to answer 6 out of 10 objective-type questions correctly in order to get the learner's driving license.

The proposal is under consideration and will be discussed further with the deputy CM Manish Sisodia in another meeting. The Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot informed that educational institutions will be consulted regarding the same before starting the service.

Colleges are not sure about this new scheme. Principal of Deen Dayal Upadhyaya College, SK Garg, questioned the new scheme and said that there is no space in the campus to conduct trials for driving license.

Principal of Kirori Mal College, Dinesh Khattar, said that the colleges are already overburdened with the academic activities and organising tests for driving license will take up more time and resources. Dr Bijayalaxmi Nanda, faculty at Miranda House, was of the same opinion.

On the other hand, Principal of Atma Ram Sanatan Dharm College, GK Jha, said that this will be very helpful for the students as they will easily be able to apply for license.

Students seem quite happy with the proposal as it will save them a trip to the RTO in order to obtain a driving license. Students are positive that the initiative will be successful just like the one where voter IDs were issued to students from their colleges.
