Eligibility Criteria for NIT Admissions to be Revised
HRD Ministry has recommended to the Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) to make certain changes in the eligibility criteria for admission to NITs
The Ministry of Human Resouce Development (MHRD) has recommended the Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) to make certain changes in the eligibility criteria for admission into NITs (National Institutes of Technology).
As per the recommendation, there should be a minimum eligibility criteria admission into the NITs that is with 75% for General Category and 70% for the SC/ ST cut-offs respectively. But CSAB is yet to take a decision on the matter.

Once the proposed changes are accepted, students securing below 75% in the class 12th board examinations will not be eligible to secure admission in NITs, even if they secure good JEE Mains scores. Though there is some relaxation for SC and ST candidates, with the cut-off for eligibility being 70%, even then they would be also at the receiving end.
Right now, for admission at NITs, aspirants need to secure 70% (in General and OBC Category) in their class 12th board examinations and candidates from SC/ST category have to get 65% scores and good ranks in JEE Mains.

After the IITs, NITs are considered the second best group of technical institutes in India. Each year around 18,000 aspirants are granted admissions to 31 NITs located in different parts of the country, which is way higher than the 10,000 candidates admitted by IITs each year.
From the next academic year of 2017, normalized score of class 12th marks will not be taken into consideration to determine JEE Main All India Ranks, which is contrary to the ratio of 60:40 considered in JEE Mains 2016.
