IIT Kharagpur has released the official brochure for the GATE 2022 examination, and along with it, the GATE 2022 exam pattern. With the help of the pattern for the GATE 2022 examination, the candidates will find out detailed information regarding the total time duration of the examination, total marks for which the examination would be conducted, mode of examination, marks allocated per question and many more. The candidates must also not forget to check out the latest GATE 2022 syllabus along with the exam pattern. The following section contains all the details regarding the GATE 2022 exam pattern and most importantly the type of questions and distribution of marks.

Marking scheme

All the questions will either carry 1 mark or 2 marks

Negative marking

  • 1/3rd marks will be deducted for 1 mark questions

  • 2/3rd marks will be deducted for 2 marks questions

  • No negative marking for NAT and MSQ

GATE 2022 Type of Questions

GATE 2022 question paper will have 3 types of questions and the features and marking scheme for each of these question types are discussed in this section - 

GATE 2022 Multiple Choice Questions

  • These types of questions come with 4 answer options 

  • Only 1 out of the given 4 options is the correct answer

  • The MCQ questions carry 1 or 2 marks 

  • 1/3rd is deducted for wrong answers for the 1 mark questions

  • 2/3rd is deducted for wrong answers for the 2 mark questions

GATE 2022 Numerical Answer Type Questions

  • These types of questions include real or value numbers as their answer options

  • The test-takers have to answer questions provided with “up to which decimal places” 

  • The test-takers can submit their responses using mouse

  • These types of questions do not come with options like Multiple Choice questions 

  • No marks are deducted for wrong answers in the NAT questions

GATE 2022 Multiple Select Questions 

  • The questions in this section will come with multiple correct answers

  • The test-takers have to identify and record all the right options for a question

  • No marks are deducted for wrong attempts in the MSQ questions
