Before diving into the GATE ranks vs marks vs score analysis 2022, understand the what is a GATE score, rank, how they are calculated, what is a good rank in GATE exam and more.

What is GATE Score 2022?

The GATE score of a candidate is calculated using a formula out of 1000, whereas the marks of a candidate are the actual number received in the test out of 100. Qualified individuals' GATE results show their GATE score as well as their marks. It is a measure of a candidate's relative performance in relation to other candidates in a certain paper. The GATE scorecard has a three-year validity period.GATE marks vs rank 2022 is an indicator of a candidate's rank based on the marks acquired by the candidate.

How is GATE Score Calculated?

There were two types of candidates who took the GATE examination; those who took exams in a single session and those who took papers in numerous sessions. The aforementioned factors are used while calculating a candidate's GATE score.

For exams taken in a single session: For all papers taken in a single session, the candidates' real marks will be utilised to calculate the GATE score 2022.

For exams administered in numerous sessions: For papers administered in multiple sessions, normalized marks matching to a candidate's raw marks will be determined. The GATE score 2022 will be computed using normalized marks.

What is a Good Score in GATE 2022?

One of the most common queries which come into the mind of GATE aspirant is that how much score is considered to be a good score for the GATE exam. After the GATE exam, different IITs, NITs and IIITs release their cutoff score for admissions. The student must acquire the cutoff marks for that specific institute if they wish to take admission in that institute. For admission into top IITs, the student must score a GATE rank below 200. However, the students having a rank in the range of 600-800 can also get admission into IITs and IIITs. For admission into leading NITs, the students should score a GATE rank in 350-800 range.

What is GATE Rank 2022?

GATE Rank is decided by the candidate's scores in the GATE exam 2022. After evaluating the candidate's marks, each qualified candidate is allocated a certain rank. The candidate can proceed with PG admission in various colleges/institutions based on this All India Rank (AIR). A candidate's GATE rank is their position in order of merit in a given subject.  GATE marks vs rank, in other words, is an indicator of candidate rank matching candidate marks.

What is a good GATE rank 2022?

Candidates should be aware of the good rank of the GATE 2022 exam. A rank within than 200 will confirm response from a PSU for most engineering branches, while a rank of less than 1,000 has a decent probability of acquiring your selected branch at IITs or NITs. Every candidate should keep in mind that a strong GATE result does not guarantee a job at a PSU or an IIT. Most PSUs and IITs conduct interviews and group discussions before selecting a candidate. The marks obtained by the toppers of various branches in the GATE exams are included in the table below.

How is the GATE Cutoff Calculated?

Based on the different factors of the exam conducted, the cutoff for the GATE exam is calculated. Based on the cutoff released for the exam, the students can get admission into various colleges/institutes. The different institutes release their cutoff marks for the admission which the student must acquire to get admission in the respective college. The GATE 2022 cutoff depends on the various factors including:

  • The total number of candidates who have appeared for the GATE exam.

  • The difficulty level of the paper.

  • Category for which the candidate is applying.

  • The total number of seats available.

The GATE cutoff is also released by PSU, based on which, the candidates who ave scored the cutoff marks can apply for the PSU posts.

GATE Marking Scheme 2022

Before moving forward, let us understand how the GATE exam is conducted. After the exam is conducted, the final result are released for GATE as per the normalisation process. The normalisation process is done to analyze the difficulty level for all the papers and then calculating the normalised score for all the papers. With the help of the marking scheme candidates can calculate their score using the GATE answer key. The GATE 2022 exam had the following marking scheme.

Type of the Questions

Marking Scheme

NAT Questions

No negative marking

MCQs with 1 marks each

⅓ marks deduction for the wrong answer

MCQs with 2 marks each

⅔ marks deduction for the wrong answer

GATE 2022 Rank vs Marks vs Score

GATE Marks: GATE exam will consist of 65 questions, containing a total of 100 marks. Based on the marking scheme of the paper, the students will be scoring certain marks depending on the right or wrong answer given by the student in the exam out of 100.

GATE Score: GATE Score refers to the score which is calculated on the basis of the normalisation process. If the different papers for GATE have a different level of difficulties, the final score is derived using the normalisation process. In this process, the score is calculated out of 1000 as the total marks. Finally, based on the normalisation formula, the final score is calculated for all the papers.

GATE Rank: GATE AIR (All India Rank) is the rank which is scored by the candidate depending on the marks obtained by the student in the exam. Using the marks of the student, a certain rank is assigned to each of the qualifying students. Based on this AIR, the student can further go for PG admission in different colleges/institutes.

GATE Counselling Process 2022

GATE 2022 does not have a centralised counselling mechanism. GATE-qualified candidates have to apply to COAP for IIT MTech admission and CCMT for NIT MTech admission. The GATE 2022 counselling process is handled through the Common Offer Acceptance Portal (COAP) and the Centralised Counselling for M.Tech/M.Des (CCMT). To be admitted to the participating institutes, candidates must apply separately for COAP and CCMT counselling. It should be noted that COAP is used for admission to IITs, whereas CCMT is used for admission to NITs, IIITs, and GFITs. Candidates seeking admission to IITs must apply to individual institutes and register at COAP 2022. Furthermore, state and private colleges perform their own GATE-based admissions counselling.

GATE Participating Colleges 2022

The IITs, NITs, and GFITs accept the admission via GATE 2022 exam. The GATE counselling process is conducted to select candidates for the GATE 2022 pariticpating insitutues. Candidates can check the list of some of the GATE 2022 pariticpating colleges given below.
