Hindi Not Mandatory Till Class 8th: New Education Policy Draft

As per the new policy draft of NEP, Hindi is not mandatory till class 8th. It is also planning to develop a uniform syllabus nationwide for Science and Maths and to develop a script in Devanagari for tribal dialects.

The nine-member K Kasturirangan committee has come up with several recommendations on the New Education Policy (NEP). The committee has recommended not to make Hindi a mandatory subject till class 8th across the country. It has also decided to ensure a uniform syllabus for Maths and Science and to develop a script in Devanagari and to promote education based on hunar (skill).

The main objective of the New Education Policy - NEP is to implement and promote Indian-centric and scientific system of learning in the schools.

Hindi is not a compulsory subject in many non-Hindi speaking states across the country such as Goa, Assam, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu etc.

Some of the other recommendations made by the committee are as follows:

  • The permanent high-power committee on education to meet at regular intervals which is to be headed by the Prime Minister
  • To strengthen the regulatory mechanism which will be headed by non-bureaucrats
  • To promote technical courses among underprivileged students

According to the sources, the National Education Policy is planning to develop a uniform syllabus up to class 5th in the local languages including Maithili, Awadhi and few others. There are many tribal dialects which have no record of the scripts or written in Roman scripts. NEP is planning to set up Devanagari will be developed as a script for such dialects.
