HRD: West Bengal, UP and MP Record Highest Ragging Complaints
- According to the HRD Data, most of the raging cases in higher educational institutions and universities are from states such as Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh.
- Over 1800 ragging complaints have been registered with UGC in the last three years.
As per reports by the UGC, there has been an increase in the ragging cases in universities and higher educational institutions and most of the raging cases are from states such as Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh. The number of cases has gone up to 910 in 2017 to 515 in 2016 and most of them were from West Bengal.
Prakash Javadekar, Union Human Resource Development said that ove r 1,839 ragging cases were received by University Grants Commission in the past three years and around 800 students were punished in these cases and 309 students were suspended.

Once the complaint is registered with the institute it is the responsibility of the anti-ragging committee of the concerned institution to look into the case and investigate the incident and to submit a report to the institution.

He further informed that no ragging complaints were recorded from higher educational institutions or universities in Daman and Diu, Andaman and Nicobar, Dadra, Nagar Haveli and Lakshadweep. On the basis of the report formed by the anti-ragging committee, the institution takes the action against the culprits and if required they send a report to the HRD Ministry or the UGC.
Meanwhile, most of the colleges and universities have introduced strict security measures in the past few years to ensure the complete security of freshers and to avoid any such ragging cases.
