IIM-Calcutta Revamps Admission Policies, Non-tech Students to Benefit

IIM-Calcutta will revamp its admission policies and will ease up on non-tech students in an attempt to shake off its image of an "engineer-only" B-school. The decision followed after being nudged by various recruiters and receiving analysis from various management experts.

Since engineering students have an upper hand in mathematics, they benefit from the CAT scores that are a determining factor for admissions to IIM-Calcutta. This trend will be changed from the session 2017 as the admission committee at the institute will give more weightage to class X and class XII scores instead of solely relying on CAT scores. The total score for picking candidates for interviews before announcing the final merit list has been cut down to half from 100 marks to 50. Now, the final merit list is also comprised of 50 points.

Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta is popular for its MBA in finance and consulting courses. Till 2016, the institute picked interviewees on the basis of 67% CAT score weightage and 15% each for Class X and Class XII scores. Women are provided with a 3% boost for gender diversity reasons.

From 2017, the weightage of CAT score will be 56% whereas that of Class X and Class XII score will be 20% each and gender diversity is raised up by 4%.

Pritam Basu, admissions chairperson at IIM-C, said that when CAT scores were prominent for admissions the institute only got engineering graduates as interviewees. The non-engineering students were offered additional weightage only in the final stage. Weightage of board results have been enhanced so that students from the non-tech background are encouraged to study in the institute. This will also balance the students coming from different educational backgrounds, he added.

IIM-C aims at bringing diverse students together so that the students can learn better from each other’s perceptive and get to interact with people from different educational backgrounds.
