IITs Scrap 50% Fee Discount for SAARC Students
Now, the students from foreign countries have to pay Rs. 6,00,000 per annum. Earlier it was only Rs. 2,50,000 per annum. On the other hand, the tuition fee for the international students has been linked to the operational cost.
Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have unanimously scrapped the 50% discount in tuition fee for the students from SAARC countries. The Chairman of IIT Council and Union Minister of Human Resource and Development Prakash Javadekar have taken the decision to ensure that all the international students in IITs will have a uniform fee structure. As of now, all the international students have to pay Rs. 6,00,000 per year.
So far, students from SAARC nations have been paying $2,000 as tuition fee while the students from other countries have been paying $4,000. The tuition fee for B.Tech course was revised from Rs. 90,000 to Rs. 2,00,000 per annum for Indian students.

Now, the students coming from Bangladesh, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Srilanka and Maldives will not be eligible for the 50% relaxation in the course fee.
The decision taken by the IIT Council and HRD Ministry has been criticised by Sanjay K. Bhardwaj, one of the professors at Centre for South Asian Students, Jawaharlal Nehru University. He indicated that SAARC nations must have a different fee structure to ensure regional cooperation with neighbouring countries.

One of the officials of HRD Ministry revealed that the uniform fee structure had been implemented to ensure that no international student gets any discount or privilege over the others.
