Mansukh Lal Mandaviya, Union Minister of State for Shipping and Road Transport and Highways, Chemical and Fertilizers in his recent visit to Indian Maritime University (IMU) Chennai, interacted with the students and faculty members and he urged them to provide international exposure to the students.

Addressing the gathering, the minister said that his government is committed to providing quality education in all segment of education including maritime sector. There is a lot of potentiality in IMU and the quality of its output could be at par with the best in the world if the students get international exposure.

Mandaviya called for onboard training for the students and to provide them with the best practical knowledge about the industry. He also appealed to the private players and they should come forward to participate in the training programmes as this would help bridge the demand-supply gap of marine experts.

While giving details on starting a new course, the minister urged the varsity to start a new course in hazardous waste management and ship breaking. In the current scenario environment-friendly ship breaking is in high demand and the University should cater to this.

The minister further revealed that to boost maritime education the present government at the Centre has increased the budget for IMU to INR 40 crore per year. Previous allocation for the same was INR 6 crore for five years under the last government. He also assured the students that many opportunities awaited for them and the central government is taking many initiatives to push the growth of the maritime sector.
