IPGMER Kolkata to Set Up Skill Lab for MBBS Students

Institute of Post Graduate and Medical Education Research (IPGMER) Kolkata is going to set up a skill laboratory for MBBS students. The skill lab will help the MBBS students to enhance their skills. The students will learn to handle patients by practicing mannequins on skin suturing, and catheter insertion.

MBBS students will also learn about the skills of the child delivery and CPR process. The skill laboratory at IPGMER Kolkata will help students enhance their skills in handling patients. According to the directives of the Medical Council of India (MCI), hospital authorities will be installing around 60 mannequins to train the first-year MBBS students of the institute.

Manimoy Bandyopadhyay, Director IPGMER informed the skill lab will be functional from March. He further informed the institute planned the laboratory for the 2019 academic batch of MBBS students. Similar laboratories will be established in two more medical institutes for the students. Earlier, all the MBBS students were trained to handle MBBS patients and apart from course work, this is one of the most important aspects of the MBBS course. As per MCI, it is mandatory for every medical college/institute to establish laboratories to develop their clinical, motor and communication skills.

One of the first-year students of IPGMER Kolkata, Pritam Pramanik said that they are excited about laboratory skills being established at the campus and they are looking forward to enhancing their clinical skills. Being able to communicate and handle the patient well is the real test of knowledge.
