JNU May Increase Seat Intake by 25%

The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) is all set to increase the number of seats by 25% in the coming academic session. The decision has been taken after being urged by the HRD Ministry to provide reservation to the students from Economically Weaker Sections category.

According to a report issued by JNU (Jawaharlal Nehru University), the institution will soon increase the intake of the applicants for its different courses and programmes. The total increment is stated to be 25%, which will be active from the approaching academic session as specified by the officials of the institution. The increment is an initiative of the HRD Ministry that intends to provide a minimum of 10% reservation to the students belonging to the EWS (Economically Weaker Sections) category.

The increase in the number of seats is to be initiated by the institutions within two years as per the norms of the HRD Ministry. Jawaharlal Nehru University agreed to work on the increment of seats for the upcoming academic session 2019-20. A total number of 1,450 seats will be added in various courses offered by JNU to comply with 10% reservation policy for EWS quota. For the academic session 2019-20, the number of seats offered by JNU will be 7,253.

This move of the Human Resource Development and Government of India will help in securing the seat shares of the students of General, Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribe, Other Backward Classes category. Other universities including the Banaras Hindu University, Tezpur University, and Delhi University have not yet come to a conclusion on the percentage of increment in the number of seats. Majority varsities have, however, agreed to increase approx 10% to 15% seats from the next academic session.
