Many Colleges in Mumbai University Functioning Without a Principal
379 colleges in Mumbai do not have a principal whereas the rest 89 colleges have principals on in-charge duty. This is because most of the affiliated colleges are unaided.
Over 761 colleges are affiliated to Mumbai University out of which 468 colleges lack full-time principals. As per the reports, 379 colleges in Mumbai do not have a principal whereas the rest 89 colleges have principals on in-charge duty. This implies that six out of every 10 colleges in Mumbai do not have full-time principals and the in-charge principals have several other responsibilities as well.
One of the senior MU officials informed that most of the colleges in the state are unaided due to which they bend rules and regulations as per their convenience.
Earlier in April this year, the state decided to uplift the sanction on the hiring of principals for aided colleges and it was a good decision for institutes where the position was vacant.
The state government said that the vacant posts are being filled but the biggest hurdle faced by the colleges is to obtain the no objection certificate from the government.

One of the Vice-Principal, Suburban Colleges, Mumbai said since past one year they are waiting for the government to approve the appointment of a principal. A similar problem is faced in getting the approval for hiring new teachers. Meanwhile, the Principals also highlighted the problem that the work expected out of them is way too much as compared to the salaries offered in return for it.

The job responsibility of a principal includes both administrative and academic work. But the salaries offered do not do justice to the amount of work.
