Panjab University (PU) Hikes Fee for Various Courses by 12.5 Percent

Leading north India’s university - Panjab University - has yet again hiked its fee by 12.5 percent for the academic year of 2017-18. This hike will be applicable to all the courses offered at the various university departments as well as other regional centres. The proposal of the fee hike was approved by the senate. It is interesting to note that a fee hike was also approved last year with the hike of 5 percent.

Now, it is estimated that at least for a few courses, the fee structure has multiples by several times as compared to its initial structure at the time of introduction.

According to the latest happenings at the university, with it facing a financial crisis, it was proposed that a new separate budget shall also be allotted for specifically the economically weaker sections of the society, also known as EWS category. As a part of this provision, these students will be entitled to scholarships as well as fee waivers.


The new fee structure will be applied to the session beginning in July. Following is a selective list of courses along with the revised fee structure for the academic year of 2017-18:

5 Master of Science (M.Sc) in Microbial Biotech Rs. 45,000/-
6 Bachelor of Law (BA-LLB) Rs. 75,000/-
7 Bachelor of Engineering (BE) in Chemical Rs. 90,000/-
8 Master of Law (LLM) Rs. 25,000/-
9 Master of Arts (MA) in Journalism Rs. 30,000/-

Arun Kumar Grover, the Vice-Chancellor of Panjab University, stated that the fee hike is nominal considering the situation of the university which is out in the open.

Other concessions are also being implemented in the interest of the students. An example of such a scheme is that the students who have successfully cleared their class 12th as a part of a government aided or government school with a family income of 5 lakh or less per year can seek a concession upto 50 percent.
