Students desirous to proceed with a Ph.D. from Nagpur University (NU) are in a tough and complicated situation as the norms introduced by the university will make it challenging to obtain a degree from there. It is being contemplated that only about 100 Ph.D. students will be receiving the degree in the next four-five years due to this difficult benchmark.

Earlier, Nagpur University was considered to be the one where a degree could be easily obtained. Moreover, many students prefer NU over other universities. The number of students receiving Ph.D. degrees has crossed a thousand since the last few convocations. In order to alter the number of students in the varsity, it has decided to enforce stricter norms.

Recently, the university released the data of the number of candidates whose abstracts were preferred by the Research Recognition Committees. Only 138 out of 236 candidates were selected while the remaining 98 were abandoned. The data was released by the Pro-VC, Mr. Pramod Yeole who is also the examination head at the university. He further proposed changes in the admission norms to reduce the quantity of Ph.D. holders from the university in future.

In 2016, the Nagpur University replaced old Ph.D. Entrance Test (PET) with a two-test pattern. PET was earlier an objective pattern test and was much easier. Under new pattern, the new two-test system is considered. The candidates are supposed to take PET-I and PET-II. PET-I consists of objective type questions and PET-II has subjective questions. The candidates need to clear both the exams to be able to submit synopsis and seek admission. Last year, 860 aspirants succeeded in PET-I and only 369 qualified in PET-II among them. Out of the 369 selected students, only 236 submitted the synopsis. Finally, a total of 138 students were selected.

NU brought some more alterations such as mandatory guides only to form a recognized research center and bring students under at least one counselor.

As per new criterion, a professor is allowed to guide eight students. On the other hand, an associate professor can have six students while an assistant professor can have four students. Also, the aspirant is not allowed to finish his/her thesis before three years.
