A very large number of students have been detained across the state of Telangana owing to their poor attendance. Nearly 21,000 students belonging majorly to private polytechnic colleges were very short of attendance due to which they are now detained.

The students who are detained will not be permitted to appear for the second and fourth-semester examinations that are scheduled to be in March and April. The total number of students studying in these semesters is 69,000 out of which 21,000 are detained now. This translates to more than 30 per cent of students being held back from giving the exams.

This decision was taken by the State Board of Technical Education and Training. They took this step because students had failed to maintain the required attendance so as to be allowed to sit for the final exams of the semester. Last year, the Board had implemented a biometric attendance system in order to improve the attendance of faculty and students in all 172 polytechnic colleges.

A senior official of the Board revealed that 80 to 85% of the students studying in the private polytechnic colleges did not give biometric attendance. This is why they fell short of attendance and faced detention. The government colleges had 10 to 15 % of students who were eventually detained.

The official further said that this issue was only with the students of the first and second year. The final year students had gone for industrial training and attendance was given to them accordingly.

The rules declare that students must have at least 75 % attendance in order to be permitted to give the semester exams. Relaxation of 10% is given to students if they produce a medical certificate.

The Board said that this step was necessary as they are working to improve the quality of technical education and institutes. It has also prepared a compensatory plan for the detained students. The Board will conduct classes in summer vacations for the detainees which they will have to attend to cover their attendance. The attendance of their regular and summer classes will be added and if they achieve 75% attendance in total then they will be allowed to give the final exams.
