Ten Engineering Colleges of Tamil Nadu on the Verge of Closure This Year
Currently, there are 627 engineering, architecture, MBA and MCA colleges across the state. Among them, a total number of ten colleges failed to apply for affiliation with Anna University.
Ten engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu are likely to shut down by the next academic session, i.e., 2017-18. The reason is that the number of students enrolling in engineering courses has been declining year after year. On the other hand, these colleges failed to apply for affiliation with Anna University this year.
Currently, there are 627 engineering, architecture, MBA and MCA colleges across the state. Among them, a total number of ten colleges failed to apply for affiliation with Anna University. Therefore, these institutions have no right to function without affiliation. According to sources, five colleges have confirmed their closure this year and two colleges requested for some time to submit all the necessary details. The actual date to apply for affiliation was by January 20, 2017.

However, five colleges gave clarity over the closure, and two requested for some time, and three colleges neither responded nor applied for affiliation. Therefore, the silence of these colleges will be confirmed as closure. These colleges are uncertain whether to function or shut down as they failed to take a decision before the deadline. Now, these three colleges have no other choice except to shut down.
One of the professors indicated that since two to three years the number of students enrolling for engineering courses declined considerably and few colleges decided to shut down as they could not sustain without admissions. In the year 2016, around 40% of colleges failed to attract the students and around half of the engineering seats remained vacant.

One of the officials revealed that in the year 2016, only 100 colleges were successful in filling 90% seats and 200 colleges succeeded in filling 79% seats. On the other hand, the rest of the colleges did not manage to fill even 50% of seats. The colleges which are located in remote areas are not in demand as there is no guarantee of securing better placement opportunities.
