UGC Directs Hindu College to Resolve Girls Hostel Fee Issue
- UGC has argued that it has no role to play in the hostel fee issue as it is an internal matter of the Hindu College.
- DCW also urged the HRD Ministry earlier to intervene in the discriminatory fee structure that is being imposed by the Delhi University college.
The University Grants Commission or UGC has informed Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) that it is the responsibility of Hindu College itself to resolve the girls’ hostel fee issue independently. On August 28, 2017, Executive Secretary of UGC appeared before Delhi Commission of Women following the summons issued by the latter on the issue. During the meeting, Executive Chairman of UGC informed DCW that the fee issue of girls’ hostel is related to the college administration and UGC has no role to play in it. Therefore, the college authorities must resolve the issue on their own, he confirmed.
The hostel fee imposed by Hindu College for boys and girls is discriminatory with the former being much lower than that of the girls’ hostel.

Earlier, the Delhi Commission for Women pointed that many colleges do not have the girls' hostel facility due to insufficient funds. The commission further alleged that many colleges have been suffering financially due to the freezing of grants from the University Grants Commission. DCW wrote several letters to UGC explaining the concerns of the students. On February 8, 2017, the Delhi Commission for Women urged UGC to resolve all the pending proposals of educational institutions. They argued that colleges could make provisions for hostel facilities for women students if the UGC would release the funds.

DCW also wrote to the HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar on the issue and urged him to solve the issue of charging a higher fee in the girl’s hostel. Later, HRD Ministry directed UGC to submit a report on the issue.
