Important Facts You must know to Crack Assertion-Reason Questions in CLAT Exam

Students must check below mentioned important points to crack assertion-reason questions more smartly and quickly.

What are Assertion-Reason Questions?

Assertion-reason questions are statement-based questions that are basically two-part problems.

  • The first part gives you a statement (assertion).
  • The second part provides you a possible reason for why that statement may be true.

As a student, your task is to check:

  1. Whether the assertion itself is true or false.
  2. Whether the reason is true or false.
  3. Whether the reason correctly explains the assertion.

This three-step check is often challenging but also very rewarding if you approach them smartly.

Why Assertion-Reason Format is used in CLAT

CLAT Assertion-Reason Questions are designed to check the aptitude and logical skills of the students in the logical reasoning section. The purpose is to check analytical ability apart from just memorising topics. Assertion-reason questions reveal whether you can:

  • Distinguish between causation and correlation.
  • Connect principles with explanations.
  • Apply reasoning instead of relying on guesswork.

While attempting questions in the exam, you can use these skills for solving both legal reasoning and logical reasoning sections. You must not rush otherwise you will end up losing marks.

Smart Strategies to Crack Assertion-Reason

Apart from the above-mentioned points to appear for CLAT exam and crack assertion-reason questions easily, one must look at the below mentioned smart strategies to make your preparation easier.

  1. Break It Down Step by Step
You must analyse the assertion independently. Check and decide whether it is factually or logically corrected with all your study and practice. Then, check the reason separately. Only after this step should you compare the two.
  2. Check for Cause-Effect Clues
One must look at the explanation carefully that usually shows cause-and-effect. If the reason simply restates the assertion in another form, it is not a strong explanation.
  3. Beware of Extreme Language
If the reason uses words like ‘always, never, or only,’ then you must check carefully as such terms often make the statement incorrect.
  4. Use Elimination Techniques
Through regular practice, you will realise that the answer choices usually follow a pattern:
    • Both assertion and reason are true, and reason explains assertion.
    • Both are true, but reason does not explain the assertion.
    • Assertion is true, reason is false.
    • Assertion is false, reason is true.

You can use systematic elimination to arrive at the right option.

Example Practice

One can look at the following example to understand how assertion-reason questions are solved

Assertion: All courts in India are bound by the judgment of the Supreme Court.
Reason: The Constitution of India is supreme over all other laws.

  • Assertion: It is true (since Article 141 makes Supreme Court rulings binding).
  • Reason: It is also true but it explains constitutional supremacy, not why courts follow Supreme Court rulings.

Correct Answer: You can see in this example that both assertion and reason are true, but reason is not the correct explanation of assertion.

Solve and practice more examples like this and gradually you will be able to understand the pattern.

Common Mistakes by Students

You must avoid common mistakes while preparing and solving assertion-reasoning questions.

  • Judging assertion and reason together instead of analysing separately.
  • Getting influenced by moral or emotional choices instead of logical correctness.
  • Guessing and rushing quickly without analysing because of time pressure.

How You Can Prepare Effectively

Student must look at the steps carefully so that they are aware about the ways to prepare effectively

  • Solve a set of 15-20 assertion-reason questions daily.
  • Identify the wrong ones and ask yourself ‘Why did I get this wrong?’
  • Use a mix of legal, logical, and static general knowledge assertion-reason questions for practice so that you don’t feel restricted to one subject area.
  • You can develop clarity with consistency and once you get the hang of it, these questions may even turn into scoring opportunities for you.
