Understanding the Question Types

If you have thorough understanding of the questions with the help of mock tests or previous year papers, then the job becomes easier for you while attempting the questions. There are mainly three primary types of questions that you will come across:

  1. Scenario-Based Decisions: In this case, you will be given certain situation like ‘a supplier accuses your firm of unfair practice; how do you respond?’ In this case, you must focus on fairness, communication, and larger good rather than involving in exchange of words.
  2. Data-Based Decisions: These questions include interpreting tables, graphs, or data before making a choice. You must be able to choose actions based on trends, numbers, or operational logic.
  3. Logical Reasoning within Decisions: This section requires your ability to check for any flawed reasoning or inconsistency in statements or actions. For solving this, your basics or fundamentals must be strong. The question tests your ability to spot the most sustainable, ethical, and effective solution.

Relevance of Decision-Making Section for Students

This section tests beyond academic or subject knowledge. While solving the caselets of the XAT Decision making section, only those students succeed who demonstrate maturity, fairness, and the ability to think beyond selfish interests. You need to be a future team player, leader, or entrepreneur which are the qualities that top B-schools look for.

Approaching Decision Making Section: Step-by-Step

  1. Read the given scenario patiently and don’t rush or panic. Identify all stakeholders that are involved such as employees, clients, managers, society and then look for a solution that are ethical as well as commanding.
  2. Find the main conflict: Is it ethical vs Practical? There can be situations where you need to identify short-term gain and long-term stability? You must know the art of right decision making for the growth of your organization.
  3. Pre-screen options: Remove impractical options, extreme, or clearly unethical responses first so that you are left with logical responses only and your decision making becomes easier and faster.
  4. Balance logic with ethics: The best actions usually combine transparency, fairness, and strategic benefit. You will have to develop transparency among your employees for long term sustainability.
  5. Always think as a manager, not just a student and place yourself like you are in the real life situation and what decisions you would expect in such scenario considering all consequences.
  6. Regular practice with the help of mock test questions and using previous year papers and analysing detailed explanations.

Tips for Beginners

  • You can do a timed practice of real or mock caselets weekly. It is important to check the answers and logical explanations to those answers.
  • Keep a track of your reasoning for a question and then compare it to an expert solution to spot differences.
  • Focus on clarity and basics: Students must note that ethical, logical, and sustainable choices are always better than clever but risky ones.
  • Don’t skip too many questions (after 8, there’s a small penalty).

At Lovely Professional University (LPU), the CMAT score cutoff for MBA admission varies each year depending on seat availability and applicant performance. Generally, a CMAT score of around 60–70 percentile is considered safe for eligibility in most MBA specializations. LPU also considers qualifying exam marks and academic performance for admission. Meeting the cutoff ensures eligibility, but higher scores improve chances for scholarships and preferred specialization selection.
