It seems like over 65,000 engineering aspirants who have cleared JEE Main 2018 exam are not interested in applying to JEE Advanced 2018 examination for the admission to IITs . Already, there has been a 30% drop out rate in the number of applications received for JEE Advanced 2018.

The huge decline in the number of students registering for JEE Advanced 2018 is from Open Category. 42% candidates belonging to Open Category did not register for the second stage of examination even though they scored good marks in JEE Main.

JEE Chairman, Professor Shalabh revealed that the number of registrations was expected to increase as details from various banks are yet to be updated. The process might take a day or two, he clarified.

This year, close to 1.8 lakh boys cleared JEE Main examination and secured eligibility for JEE Advanced. However, only 1.2 lakh among them registered for the second stage of entrance exam. JEE Advanced 2018 is scheduled to take place on May 20, 2018, in CBT mode.

The difficulty levels of JEE Advanced and JEE Main are different. Many candidates prefer joining NITs after clearing JEE Main. Therefore, they do not register for the next level of examination.

According to experts, UG engineering courses in foreign universities have become most popular among the students. A few students who were waiting for the confirmation of admission in foreign universities considered appearing for JEE Main as a backup plan. Since many of them secured admission in international universities , they did not apply for JEE Advanced, pointed out the experts.

This year, 48% students who were eligible to appear for JEE Advanced were from General Category. On the other hand, 28% OBC-NCL, 15% SC and 7.5% ST candidates cleared JEE Main exam.
