The High Court of Madras has confirmed that Aadhaar card and its photocopy are mandatory for NEET-UG 2018 counselling for the admission to medical and dental courses in Tamil Nadu. Earlier, petitions were filed in Madras HC alleging that non-Tamil Nadu students are being admitted to medical courses without proper scrutiny of the guidelines justifying their nativity.

Therefore, Justice N Kirubakaran passed the interim order making Aadhaar mandatory for state-level NEET counselling process.

Justice N Kirubakaran directed the authorities of medical education in Tamil Nadu to insist students on the production of Aadhaar cards at the time of counselling.

The petitioners alleged that many non-Tamil Nadu students were granted admission in medical courses based on the nativity certificate that was obtained fraudulently. Such instances are reducing the chances of Tamil Nadu medical aspirants in getting admission to medical courses.

In 2017, a committee of government officials and advocates informed the Madras HC that it conducted a random scrutiny of nativity certificates produced by 296 students for the admission to MBBS course in Tamil Nadu for the academic session 2017-18. The committee found that most of these certificates were issued without proper scrutiny or inquiry.

Assistant Solicitor General (ASG), Mr. Karthikeyan sought time to figure out the details of candidates applied for MBBS admission in Tamil Nadu and other states.

The court pointed out that Aadhaar was mandatory in other states for MBBS counselling. Mandatory Aadhaar rule will prevent the students from other states from getting benefit under the state quota. Therefore, it would be better if Tamil Nadu medical education authorities follow the mandatory Aadhaar rule strictly.
