B. Tech graduates with B.Ed degree can now teach Maths from class 6th to 8th both in government and private schools. According to the government order, the higher education department has given equivalence to a B.Tech degree with B.Ed for the post of BT assistants.

One of the main reasons that the government took this decision is to reduce unemployment among B.Tech graduates. NCTE decided to relax the norms allowing B.Tech graduates to pursue a B.Ed degree course in the year 2015. It was also noticed that most of the women IT professionals take an interest in joining B.Ed course for a better work-life balance.

The uncertainty of jobs is one of the major factors that keep engineering graduates away from joining B.Ed course. Earlier, the government had reserved 20 percent of seats for B.Tech graduates and now it is five percent due to fewer applications. One of the college principal said that the TN government has only given equivalence to Maths degree and engineering graduates have been admitted to other fields such as Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and others. The government should take a decision regarding these fields as well.
