The researchers and alumnus at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi have created India’s first ever Braille laptop for the visually-impaired. The laptop is named as ‘DotBook’ as the interface of the device is in the form of Braille or dots.

The laptop does not have a screen and instead it displays text in the form of Braille through a touchpad. Just by touching the pad, the users can feel everything that is there on a website. The creators have made it user-friendly by putting maximum information in just one line.

Instead of opting for a job, the creators of DotBook- 27-year-old Suman Muralikrishnan from Chennai and 26-year-old Pulkit Sapra from Delhi, invested their 5 years on the research, which later resulted in India’s first ever laptop for visually-impaired. They said that creating the interface was the most difficult part and it took five years.

DotBook is built in Linux and comes with 4 GB internal storage which can be expanded up to 64 GB. The cost of the 20-Cell version laptop is Rs.40,000 whereas the 40-Cell laptop comes at a price of Rs.60,000 To provide a visual display for other people, DotBook can also be connected with other laptops and mobile phones.

The Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi has decided to disburse free laptops to some underprivileged and meritorious students.
