IIT Hyderabad Goes Traditional, Ditches Black Gown
Students wore pochampallis at their convocation ceremony.
Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad goes traditional and ditches the black gowns for graduation. Recently IIT-H celebrated its convocation ceremony and students wore the traditional Pochampalli capes. The pochampalli capes were made by the local weavers, it is a local art of Telangana which the institute wants to appreciate.

The proposal to discard the black gowns was given by Professor Deepak Mathew. He is head of the department of design and formerly worked at the National Institute of Design. He suggested the board that the black capes they rent costs them Rs 450 per cape and the pochampalli will cost them the same. The nice thing about these pochampalli capes is that students can keep them they don’t have to return them. He himself sat with the weavers to help them sew the logo of the institute.

To make everything a little more interesting different colours were assigned to different batches. Following are the details:
- BTech students- Deep Brown
- MTech students- Light Blue
- PhD scholars- Yellow
And to make those pochampallis pop students wore white kurta pyjamas.
