IIT Kanpur to Boost Research in Cyber Security Domain

Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IIT-K) plans to move a step ahead with more research and training initiatives in the cyber security domain in India. The institute is devising a strategy and seeking funds from the center to move ahead with the plan.

A MoU was signed between IIT-K and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) in order to enhance the cyber domain security of the leading stock market of India. The collaboration will help initiate studies related to cyber security in the financial market.

The association will also help tackle upcoming cyber challenges, developing tools to enhance. Assistance will also be provided to BSE regarding cyber issues, testing vulnerabilities in networks and IT system. It will also help in setting guidelines and auditing security operations.

Prof Sandeep Shukla, Faculty of computer science, IIT-K, informed that a Centre for Cyber Security has been established on the campus. This facility is being used to develop state-of-art cyber security technologies and strengthen the ties with government organizations and industries to come up with efficient methodologies technology and cyber security frameworks for India.

Specific proposals have been sent by IIT-K to the Union Finance Ministry and Science & Technology Ministry in order to get funds up to Rs. 100 crore to facilitate and integrate their research & development (R&D) initiative in the field of cyber security.

"We are aiming to provide cyber security to vital installations such as the Power Grid and other private organizations," Prof Agarwal underlined.

Among the other initiatives, IIT-K is planning to associate with the private sector and other global premier institutions that have been known for their in-depth cyber security research and better understanding of the subject.

The institute has also signed a MoU with the Blavatnik Interdisciplinary Cyber Research Center (ICRC), Tel Aviv University, Israel. The MoU will help in facilitating bilateral academic relationships, research collaborations and teaching projects.

Various projects have been undertaken by the two institutions for research purposes as well. Among them are smart city, smart agriculture, sewage and water treatment, signal processing, machine learning, transportation and privacy-preserving cryptography, alternative governance models for cybersecurity, utilities, big data analytics and cryptanalysis.

IIT-K had also tied up with the Tandon School of Engineering, New York University for research and student/faculty exchange.
