IITs Should Feature among Top 100 Global Institutions: Union Minister

Union Minister, Mr. Satya Pal Singh hoped that Indian premier institutes like IITs must feature among the top 100 global institutions. In order to achieve this, the premier institutes need to fulfil multiple requirements such as better innovation and research output, a satisfactory number of international students and international faculty.

With a motive to make premier engineering institutes in India like IITs and NITs feature in the top 100 global institutes across the globe, the central government will take steps to provide financial assistance up to Rs. 1 lakh crore to IITs and NITs. Mr. Satya Pal Singh made this statement while delivering his speech 6 ^th convocation ceremony of IIT Bhubaneswar . ​

Explaining further, Dr. Satya Pal Singh mentioned that of IITs and NITs must find a spot among the top 100 global institutes across the globe, multiple attentions on various issues is necessary. For instance, IITs should be in a position to attract more international students and international faculty. The research activities and research output of IITs should be at par with the top global institutes. For promoting quality research, IITs need additional infrastructure and facilities. Therefore, the government will provide the necessary funding to enable IITs to aim for top spots in global rankings, he detailed.

On this occasion, he congratulated the 295 graduating students of the premier institute. He hailed the efforts of teachers and parents in motivating the students to come out with flying colours.

He urged the graduating students that it is their responsibility to make India a pioneer country in Artificial Intelligence, Big Data, Cloud Technology, Virtual Reality and Robotics. A new industrial revolution in these fields must dominate in future, he hoped.

The Union Minister appreciated the efforts of IIT Bhubaneswar in promoting research . The premier technical institute has been taking research on wide range of subjects. IIT Bhubaneswar’s research activity on ‘utilisation of industrial waste for developing eco-friendly geo-polymer concrete through effective utilisation of red mud and fly ash’ is highly appreciable. The research conducted by IIT Bhubaneswar is highly effective in making eco-friendly roads, bridges, buildings and long-lasting physical assets, he highlighted.

Dr. Satya Pal Singh has launched RISE (Revitalising Infrastructure Systems in Education). The aim of RISE is to provide financial aid to IITs, IISERs and NITs up to Rs. 1 lakh crore for a period of four years.

The Union HRD Ministry also sanctioned 22 supernumerary seats for female candidates . These seats will be available in B.Tech courses form the upcoming academic session. The total intake of IIT Bhubaneswar will be increased from 350 to 372.
