IITs to PSUs: Round-up Hiring before M.Tech Admission Process

IITs – the premier technical institutes of India – have asked participating PSUs to complete their hiring process before the completion of the admission process for M.Tech programmes. The decision has been taken to restrain students from quitting their studies midway.

Directors of IITs recommended the move at a meeting attended by HRD Ministry Official and representatives of the PSU. With this move, more engineering graduates will enroll for M.Tech programmes. Admission process for M.Tech programmes will be completed by July 15.

Close to 25% M.Tech seats fall vacant at various IITs as students quit their course midway after getting opportunities to work at PSUs. Close to 1,500 IIT graduates are recruited by the PSUs every year, who have assured to discuss the matter with the government.

Director of IIT Delhi, V Ramgopal Rao said that the vacant seats in M.Tech courses can be controlled if the PSUs restrict their hiring process by mid-July.

In the session 2016, 8,000 students enrolled for M.Tech at IITs out of which 2,000 left after getting job opportunities. 1,500 of these students were offered jobs by PSUs while the other 500 were offered jobs by private organizations.

14,000 students enroll for M.Tech programmes at the 23 IITs across India. Admissions are done on the basis of GATE Exam score. This score is also considered by PSUs for recruitment of candidates. IIT Delhi, IIT Madras and IIT Bombay are the affected the most due by midway desertion.
