The Medical Council of India (MCI) has allowed a one-time exemption from NEET 2020 to all the candidates who are planning to pursue MBBS /BDS courses in foreign universities.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, such candidates need not appear in NEET 2020 exam which is to take place on September 13. However, candidates will have to appear and qualify the exam either in 2020 or in 2021. This is only a one-time exemption for the candidates and its totally upon them whether to qualify NEET 2020 or take up the exam next year.

Dr RK Vats, Secretary-General, Board of Governors in Suppression fo MCI informed that in case a candidate fails to clear the test, then their decision to continue Foreign Medical Courses will be totally at their own risk. Also, if a candidate fails the NEET exam then they will not be eligible for the FMGE Exam or MCI Screening Test and will not be entitled to either Provisional or Permanent Registration by the State Medical Councils.

In February 2018, the Medical Council of India made it mandatory for all the medical aspirants to pass the NEET exam to obtain an eligibility certificate. It is only then that the candidates pursue the MBBS course in foreign universities.

This year, due to the COVID pandemic NEET 2020 exam was postponed twice and will not take place on September 13, 2020. Many petitions were filed in the Supreme Court by the aspirants to seeking exemption from the exam this year as they were unable to take admission to foreign medical colleges due to the delay in the NEET exam.
