Meet Alok Sagar, An ex-IIT Professor who has been Serving Tribal People for 32 years

Alok Sagar, a graduate from the Indian Institute of Technology – Delhi and Post-graduate and doctorate from Houston has set an example with his extraordinary social service.

Alok was once a professor at one of the IITs who later resigned to serve the less fortunate. Alok has been living in the tribal areas of Madhya Pradesh from past 32 years to help the locals.

In his career as a professor, he has been the guiding light for exemplary students such as the ex-RBI governor Raghuram Rajan.

He has been working for the welfare of the locals belonging to the tribal regions of Betul and Hoshangabad districts of Madhya Pradesh. He has been living in Kochamu, a small village with a population of 750 tribal people. The village is located in a remote region and is not connected to the urban sectors due to lack of roads. There is no electricity supply in the village. He has planted over 50,000 trees in this region.

Alok believes that the right way to serve the country is to work at the grass root levels. He said that there are a lot of grave problems that the Indian citizens are facing but people are not keen to help them and they believe more in proving their intelligence by showing their degrees.

Alok doesn’t believe in coming to the limelight. Not very long ago, the local authorities grew suspicious of Alok during the district elections of Betul and asked him to leave. He then revealed his true identity to the locals and the district administration found his identification to be true once the verification was done.

Unlike many others, Alok does not believe in glory. He is a simple person who owns three sets of kurtas and travels through the village on his cycle distributing seeds. He can speak multiple languages and local dialects. He works closely with the Shramik Adivasi Sangathan and works solely for the benefit of the people.
