The Mumbai University (MU) has announced that a re-exam will be conducted that was held on December 13, 2019. The decision was taken after it distributed wrong question papers to M.Sc students.

In different centres, question papers in the old syllabus were given to regular M.Sc (Physics) students and repeaters were given question papers in the new syllabus. 50 per cent of the 60-mark paper on Statistical Mechanics had questions from the old syllabus, alleged the regular students. The decision would, however, affect hundreds of students.

The decision was taken in a meeting of the university's board of examinations organised on December 26 and the re-exam is scheduled to be held on January 14. The board has said that the better score of the two will be considered.

An M.Sc in Physics student urged that the re-exam would be unfair as many of the students would not be in the right state of mind to sit the exam. The student further said that the subject code on the paper and the one in the hall ticket were different which was brought to the notice of the concerned authorities of the university. Pradeep Sawant, a Senate member said that the issue will be raised in the meeting of the management council. He added that the incidence was a result of negligence on the authorities and the move to hold a re-exam is not the best decision for the students. They could have decided to give marks for incorrect/unanswered questions.

An official of the university mentioned that the decision was taken with the best interest of the students in mind. Many students got the right paper at few centres which would have been difficult to figure out. However, few students may oppose the move for 50 per cent marks to be given to all the MSc Physics students.
