Prof. Najma Akhtar Becomes the First Female VC of Jamia Millia Islamia
Jamia Millia Islamia appoints the first female Vice-Chancellor, Professor Najma Akhtar after almost 100 years since its inception. She was earlier working as the head of the department at the National Institute of Education Planning and Administration.
Professor Najma Akhtar has been appointed as the first female Vice-Chancellor of JMI since its inception in 1920. She was previously working at the National Institute of Educational Planning and Administration (NIEPA). Najma is the 16th VC of Jamia Millia Islamia as well as the first female VC of any of the central universities present in the national capital of India, Delhi. She takes over the seat of VC after Talat Ahmad, who has been appointed as the VC of the University of Kashmir.
In a statement made by the Public Relations Officer of Jamia Millia Islamia, Azeem Ahmed, has said that the entire fraternity of Jamia Millia Islamia has accepted the change with a warm heart and have pledged complete cooperation.

Professor Najma Akhtar has been the Head of the department at the National Institute of Educational Planning and Administrative for 15 years. She was also involved in developing a successful state-level management institute, a first of its kind in India, at Allahabad which is focused at developing educational administrators in India. She also held various important positions in various top quality educational institutions such as being the director of academic programmes and the controller of examinations at Aligarh Muslim University. She also led capacity building programmes at IGNOU for various distance educators, both at the national and international levels.
Professor Najma Akhtar has completed her studies from various international universities such as the University of Nottingham and Warwick as well as IIEP UNESCO in Paris, She completed her PhD in Education from Kurukshetra University. She has also worked as a consultant in many global institutions such as UNICEF UNESCO and the Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA) among others. Najma Akhtar is also a gold medallist from Aligarh Muslim University.
