Poor Performance of Mumbai University in 2017

For the University of Mumbai, 2017 might be a disastrous year, as the varsity was surrounded by chaos due to the delay in declaring the final year results. On the other hand, for the first time in the last 30 years, Vice Chancellor of Mumbai, Mr. Sanjay Deshmukh was sacked for his negligence in implementing ‘On Screen Assessment’ system in an effective manner.
Due to his negligence, the varsity declared the results of final year exams with six months delay, which led to chaos. Even after declaring the results, the results of many students were put on hold due to missing or untraceable answer sheets. Due to the results chaos, Mumbai University failed to apply for NAAC reaccreditation this year.

Most of the ambitious projects of former VC of Mumbai University, Mr. Sanjay Deshmukh such as setting up MU campuses in Dubai and the United States had not seen the light of the day. With an objective to provide hands-on-training to B.Sc Aviation students of MU, Mr. Sanjay planned to purchase an aircraft. However, the plan had not materialised due to results chaos and other issues. Similarly, his idea to raise an endowment fund of Rs. 1,000 crore for the development of varsity has remained on paper. Apart from these, many developmental activities have been stalled due to results mess.

According to sources, Mr. Sanjay Deshmukh introduced the ‘On Screen Marking’ system without holding proper consultations with the varsity officials and teachers. On the other hand, the varsity and teachers involved in the evaluation were not well prepared and acquitted to the new system, which led to delay in announcing results. Due to the delay, many of the students lost job opportunities or failed to take up higher studies.
The varsity has taken adequate measures to regulate further errors or irregularity in On-Screen Marking system.
