SC Dismisses Date Extension Plea for NEET-UG 2017

The apex court of the country, i.e. the Supreme Court dismissed the plea that sought a change in the schedule of the national level medical entrance exam - National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET 2017) . The exam is supposed to be conducted on 7th May 2017. The court said that the preparations are already in place for the exam to be conducted on the designated date and it is difficult to reschedule the exam now.

The petition was filed keeping in view the short preparation time for students who will be finishing with their board exams in the last week of April 2017.

The petitioner, Dr, (Major) Gulshan Garg (retd.) who is the Chairman of the Sankalp Charitable Trust filed a petition in the Supreme Court clearly stating that the extension plea is put forward with respect to the future of about three lakh students who will be appearing for the medical entrance exam this year. He revealed that other stakeholders and his trust will further approach the CBSE and other concerned ministries to seek relief and extension.

NEET is a medical entrance exam which is conducted by CBSE i.e. the Central Board of Secondary Education. Candidates who successfully clear the exam are granted admission to MBBS as well as BDS courses in various medical and dental colleges of the country. These colleges are approved by the Medical Council of India (MCI) and the Dental Council of India (DCI). Moreover, these colleges come under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, GOI. Other reputed medical institutes of the country such as JIPMER and AIIMS were established through an Act of Parliament and therefore conduct their own entrance examinations.
