Tech Institutes Ranking to be Based on Number of Startups Created: AICTE
AICTE highlights the importance of research, innovation, and most importantly, entrepreneur creation in technical universities. Technical institutes will now also have to keep a separate budget for research activities.
All India Council of Technical Education commonly (AICTE) has amended its policies and rules for AICTE affiliated technical universities across India. It has also created a new scale of ranking which will evaluate ‘Startups Created’ as a factor of consideration while ranking the technical institutes. The amendment is also expected to propose changes in the faculty roles, research facilities and the curriculum of the technical universities across the country.
AICTE has asked the technical institutes affiliated under the council to allocate separate budget and proper funding for research projects. The circular issued by AICTE proposes budget allocation to encourage research for academic development in the institutes.
Anil D. Saharsabudhe, AICTE's chairman suggested that there is no shortage of talent and world-class research projects in India and most of the innovations that come from technical institutes are from IITs, NITs, IISERs etc. The council emphasized the hidden potential that is buried under the pyramid in other technical institutes. He also mentioned that the allocation of budget for research projects will strengthen the startup ecosystem and eventually end up in creating more jobs.
The circular of AICTE suggests that the council may soon revamp its ranking process in terms of Startups and Entrepreneurs created rather than the current process where the council ranks the institute as per students’ achievements and academic records. MHRD innovation cell @ AICTE has started with the AARIA ranking which focuses on entrepreneurship, innovation, and startups.
The council also seeks to increase the industry-oriented academic courses that will help increase employability for the students. To proceed with the resolution, AICTE aims to conduct industrial training to faculties where they will be trained by companies such as NASSCOM and FICCI.

As per the new AICTE policy, the teachers will have to go through eight online training programs known as MOOCs on SWAYAM web portals. The offline courses will also be available in some universities and National Institute of Technical Teachers Training and Research, popularly known as NITTTR.
