UGC Forbids Deemed Universities & Institutions from Fixing Fees
UGC has denied all the deemed universities in the country to fix fee as per the convenience. The commission has asked all the state governments to set up a fee fixation committee to look into fee charged by the deemed universities.
The University Grants Commission (UGC ) is all set to regulate the fee charged by deemed universities for professional courses. The commission is working on a regulation that proposes to set up a high-powered committee to know about the reasons behind high course fee charged by deemed universities.
UGC offers deemed-to-be-university status to institutes and departments of various varsities in India who have showcased high performance and maintained excellent academic records. The deemed status provides these institutes freedom to set guidelines for admission process, fee structure, syllabus, set up research centers and others.

Some medical students' parents from Maharashtra stated that the deemed medical institutes in the state charge anywhere between Rs. 8 lakh to Rs. 25 lakh per annum and can hike the fees every year as per their convenience. The amount is just impossible to pay
As per the UGC’s regulations, it is mandatory for all the state governments of the country to establish a fee-fixation committee/panel who can look into fees charged by the deemed universities.

One of the other parents is of the view that new UGC regulations will help keep a check on the fee hike in deemed universities and the petition also stands a better chance as the new UGC regulation is in place.
