Most of the universities in India have reservations for different categories such as OBC, Sc and ST. BSc Agriculture admission also has reservation for students representing OBC, SC, and ST Quota. BSc Agriculture reservation is provided in two different ways. One of the most common aspects is reservation in the total number of seats for reserved quota. While others may get relaxation in eligibility marks forBSc Agricultureadmission in most agricultural universities in India, both in terms of reserved seats and relaxed eligibility marks. However, one can find out the exact benefits only after applying through different channels such as the exact benefits depending on whether you apply through ICAR’s national quota or through the quota of any state agricultural university’s own quota.

BSc Agricultural reservation mainly operates through ICAR or state agricultural universities. ICAR has a reservation quota at national level called the All India Quota (AIQ), and all eligible students can apply for reservation. Students must note that under ICAR-UG, a fixed percentage of seats are reserved for different categories in different agricultural universities across India. There is a reservation of 15% for SC, 7.5% for ST, and 27% for OBC (Non-Creamy Layer). Also, there are reservation provisions for EWS and PwBD quotas.

Relaxation in Eligibility Marks

One of the commonest ways to provide reservation to OBC, SC and ST are to provide some benefits in overall percentage of marks. B.Sc Agriculture programs like any other science graduate programs require students to complete their 10+2 (Science) with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology/Maths with a minimum 50% marks. However, reserved category students often get an overall 5% relaxation in required marks. For example, most of the universities require 50% marks in 12th for the general category, while the same requirement is about 45% for OBC/SC/ST students.

It has also been noted that some states have set specific rules for agricultural universities where the minimum percentage requirement is set around 45%, but reserved categories can appear for the same with 40% aggregate. It becomes easier for OBC, SC and ST students to take admission in different BSc Agricultural colleges in India because of reservations.

Seat Reservation and Domicile Rules

Most of the state agricultural universities and private universities in India follow a vertical category of reservation such as General, SC, ST, OBC, and EWS. In certain institutions, you can also find reservations being divided as per horizontal categories such as women, PwD, orphans, or specific state domiciles. In general, universities and institutions follow a fixed percentage of SC and ST reservations and students often avail 15% and 7.5% reservations for SC and ST category respectively. OBC reservations are usually found to be around 27 percent for both state universities and central universities.

Many state universities reserve a large share of seats in the name of state-domicile students to give more preference to the students of their respective state. Within the reserved domicile seats, state universities then apply OBC/SC/ST reservation quota to provide maximum benefits to these categories. OBC, SC, and ST students are often waived off for their application fee or charged minimum so that maximum students can benefit from reservation. An important information that all BSc Agriculture aspirants note is that reservations for SC, ST, and OBC apply uniformly across all the ICAR participating agricultural universities as they contribute seats.

Fee Concessions and Scholarships

As mentioned above, apart from the relaxation in the eligibility criteria for taking BSc agriculture admissions in the top agricultural colleges in India, students are also offered concessions in many private universities, institutes and state agricultural universities beyond admission and eligibility relaxation. Students can avail concessions in tuition fees, hostel fees, different types of scholarships etc while taking admission in colleges that offer BSc agriculture or ICAR affiliated colleges. Some schemes by state and central government also aim to support reserved-category students pursuing BSc agriculture and allied courses against state-quota seats. These special provisions cover a majority part of your tuition fee or sometimes the entire amount is funded by a certain organization for reserved categories and if you meet the income requirements as specified.

FAQs

What documents are needed to claim reservation in B.Sc Agriculture admission?

You generally need a valid caste certificate (SC/ST/OBC-NCL), sometimes an income certificate, along with standard documents like 10th and 12th marksheets, ID proof, and category certificates uploaded or shown during counselling.

Can you get a B.Sc Agriculture seat with 40% in 12th as a reserved category student?

In some states and universities, reserved categories like SC/ST/OBC may be eligible with around 40% aggregate in 12th if the official rules specify such relaxation, but you must verify the latest notification for that university.

OBC (NCL) reservation is clearly implemented in ICAR’s All India Quota and in central agricultural institutions; in state agricultural universities it follows the reservation policy of that particular state.
