Ways to Solve CAT DILR Questions Quickly Under Exam Pressure
You must follow the tips mentioned below to be able to solve CAT DILR questions rapidly under exam conditions:
- Allot the first 5-6 minutes to take a glance at all DILR sets in the section to determine the type of sets provided among table, chart, arrangement, puzzle, the difficulty level of the sets, and the number of questions from each set.
- Invest at least 3-5 minutes to delve deeper into data provided and not just skim through it to determine if you should solve the set during round 1 or round 2 of attempts or leave it unattempted.
- Scrutinize the statements and conditions, point out the most important condition, create a visual representation or mental image of the information, and try to find out important clues from certain words and phrases used in the set to frame the solution effectively.
- For Seating arrangements, Distribution puzzles, Family trees, and Network flows, classify and arrange the information in the form of grids, tables, diagrams or draw arrangements.
- The order in which you solve the DILR sets also determines how quickly you can answer the maximum number of questions within the stipulated time. You may come across certain sets where you are not required to solve the entire set but pick individual questions smartly and answer them. Answer the direct questions first and move on to the questions that require complex calculations.
- Target the easiest sets with brief and to-the-point problem statements with 5-7 lines and straightforward language first framed on topics like Bar Graphs, Tables with missing values, LR, Pie Charts, Arrangements, Team Formation & Sequencing, Venn Diagrams, Binary Logic etc. Rather than choosing sets that are inferential in nature or have multi-step puzzles, solving sets with clear and structured data saves your time.
- Identify the sets that have a format similar to the ones you have practised the most like tables, linear arrangements, graphs, etc.
- Half the battle is won when you pick up 2-3 best sets with the highest accuracy rather than solving all four sets. Do not take more than 8-10 minutes to complete a set and aim to solve one set with maximum accuracy before moving on to the next. If you feel that a particular question in the set is too lengthy and time-consuming, skip it and pick it up later. This prevents you from getting stuck on a single question and losing time.
- The time required per set can be reduced significantly by solving past question papers or mock tests using digital timers under rigorously timed conditions simulating the real exam environment. A maximum of 7-8 minutes must be allotted for sets with medium difficulty level involving Bar Graphs, Tables, LR, and DI Hybrid Caselets; 9-10 minutes may be required to solve sets on Circular Arrangement; and sets on Games & Tournaments can be solved in 12 minutes.
- Master Mental Math, key fractions, approximation, squares, cubes up to 30, and make smart guesses to be able to quickly eliminate impossible answer options.
