Classification of PSUs

1. Maharatna (Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, NTPC Limited, GAIL (India) Limited, etc.)

Maharatna is the status granted to the highest public sector organizations, which gives them the authority to engage in risky bets of up to Rs 5,000 crores without seeking government approval. In order for an organization to be considered Maharatna, it must have annual net profits of over 5,000 crores rupees, assets of 15,000 crores, and a turnover of 25,000 crores for the previous three consecutive years. The current list of companies with Maharatna status includes SAIL, ONGC, NTPC, CIL, and IOCL.

2. Navratna (Engineers India Limited, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited, etc.)

The Department of Public Enterprises awards firms with Navratna status. A score of 60 out of 100 is required for the organization to be recognized as a Navratna. The score is based on six parameters, including a net benefit to total assets, an absolute labor supply cost added to the cost of goods produced or services rendered, PBDIT (Profit before depreciation, premium, and assessments) to capital employed, PBDIT to turnover, EPS (Earnings per Share), and sectoral performance. Additionally, before becoming a Navratna, a company must first be a Miniratna and have four independent heads on its board.  

The Navratna status grants benefits to increase financial and functional independence and commits to contributing up to Rs. 1000 crores or 15% of their entire assets to a single enterprise without seeking government approval. These organisations are permitted to spend up to 30% of their annual total assets, but not more than Rs. 1000 crores. They will also have the chance to form alliances, launch auxiliary units, and engage in cooperative ventures overseas.

3. Miniratna (Airports Authority of India, Engineering Projects (India) Limited, Antrix Corporation Limited, etc.)

The Miniratna PSUs are further divided into two groups: Category I and Category II. The Maharatna PSUs are the companies that generate the maximum revenue, the Navratna PSUs at the median, and the Miniratna PSUs at the minimum. There are several Miniratna CPSEs (Centre Public Sector Enterprises) in India, and these Miniratnas are given a variety of tasks to do in order to improve worldwide marketing.

The Union Government of India has made the decision to grant representatives of various financial powers and autonomy to a wide range of diverse for-profit businesses. This new category, created by the Government of India, is called as Miniratna. The Miniratnas have also joined joint ventures, established subsidiary enterprises, and established transnational corporations, but all of these are subject to certain qualifying requirements in order to strengthen and increase their competitiveness.

Established in 1974, this government-owned enterprise ranks among the biggest fertiliser companies, with an annual revenue of Rs. 75 billion. The National Fertilisers Limited (NFL) recruits CSE candidates for the Officers post through GATE exam.

• NLC India Limited (NLC)

NLC, also referred to as NLCIL (Neyveli Lignite Corporation India Limited), is one of India’s Navratna PSUs. NLCIL is engaged in coal and lignite mining as well as power generation.

• Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC)

The Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), headquartered in New Delhi, India, is a global crude oil and gas corporation. As of 2022, the company generated sales of approximately Rs. 5.39 lakh crores and employed approximately 30,000 people. More than 70% of the crude oil produced in the nation is generated by ONGC, which is also classified as a "Maharatna" company. By hiring them as Programming Officers, ONGC offers CS/IT candidates one of the best career opportunities at the E-1 level.
