Teachers at DU Demand for Maithili as a Subject

The department of Modern Indian Languages at Delhi University has demanded to include Maithili as a subject. A section of DU teachers raised the demand to the higher authority of the varsity.

Teachers at Delhi University (DU) raised a demand to include one more language to the Department of MIL (Modern Indian Languages), Delhi University. The introduction of Maithili language in the schools of Delhi has increased the demands of the language at the varsity. On 21st September 2019, a section of DU teachers raised this to the concerned department.

A letter was addressed to a former academic council (AC) member, Vice-Chancellor of DU, Yogesh Tyagi and Rajiv Kumar Verma, Associate Professor, Satyawati College by the DU teachers. The letter read that during the academic session of 2019-20, the varsity added Maithili Elective and Maithili Core in the language subjects list. The UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) also included Maithili as one of the optional subjects in the UPSC Civil Services Examination which was successful.

The letter demanded to initiate the introduction of Maithili language as a subject in the Department of Modern Indian Langauge of Delhi University. To this, the associate professor at Satyawati College, Rajiv Kumar Verma said that the demand was backed by many other teachers. He added that the language is spoken by a number of students at the varsity. Hence, it should be introduced as a subject here. Akshit Dahiya, president of Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) also supported the demand and said that this will be helpful in encouraging Purvanchali students in the university.

Currently, the department of Modern Indian Languages at the university offers eleven languages including Bengali, Kannada, Telugu, Assamese, Gujarati, Manipuri, Oriya, Sindhi, Malayalam, Marathi and Tamil. The department offers Certificate Diploma, Advanced Diploma, M.Phil, PhD and MA in these languages. The university conducts entrance examinations for the programmes offered.
