IIT Delhi Launches Centre for Automotive Research and Tribology
IIT Delhi takes a step forward with the launch of Centre for Automotive Research and Tribology which will aim at working towards the designing, development as well as the analysis in the area of Electrical Vehicle Motors and Drives. IIT Delhi will provide PG Programmes in the areas of Electrical Vehicles.
A new centre has been launched by the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi. The Centre for Automotive Research and Tribology (CART), was developed from IIT Delhi’s ITMMEC and was founded on Friday, 31st of May 2019. IIT Delhi aims to use the centre as a means of teaching, researching as well as providing technical service in the various areas of the automotive industry such as Electrical Vehicles, Automotive Health Monitoring, Energy Storage and Monitoring, Calibration and Diagnostic and Tribology.
With the launch of CART, IIT Delhi aims to build a strong relationship with various Universities, industries as well as research labs all across India and in foreign countries. Through this collaboration, the centre will be able to undertake different cutting edge research as well as provide postgraduate programmes in the areas of automotive research and tribology.

In the inception of CART, IIT Delhi had decided that a third of the faculty in CART will be additional faculty that have been affiliated with the present industry. This has been done to provide a unique feature to the postgraduate programmes that will be provided by the centre. Some of the key areas for research at the centre will consist of Development, Analysis as well as the design of the Electrical Vehicle Motors and Drives.

At the launch of the centre, Prof V Ramgopal Rao, the director of IIT Delhi had stated that the inception of the centre will help the country take a step forward into the future in terms of transportation. He stated that the world is moving towards electric transportation, therefore, developing a centre of excellence in the area is a requirement. This will help India to change to a much eco-friendly method of transportation along with placing India at a Global level in terms of producing the technology for the purpose.
