IIT Delhi Expels 12 Students for Failing Exams
IIT Delhi is trying to figure out the reason for poor perfromance of the 12 expelled students.
Authorities at IIT- Delhi are trying to figure out the reason for the bad performance of the students after 12 of them were expelled from school for scoring unsatisfactory marks.
This was for the second time in a row that these students had scored 5 CGPA (cumulative grade point average) out of a maximum of 10. Following this, the institute also saw the need of a parents teacher meeting for the first time to discuss the academic performance of the students with their parents.

Apart from this, the institute has also held 400 BTech students on probation for poor performance.
On looking deep in the matter, it has been estimated that one of the reasons behind a child’s poor performance is said to be the language barrier. According to IIT director V Ramgopal Rao, most of the students who were found to be struggling in their exams have completed their schooling in Hindi medium.
He also added that they have not got a chance to interact with each and every student on a personal level and therefore cannot say how many of the expelled students were from Hindi-medium schools or what their backgrounds were.

He pointed out that last year a similar case was seen when 93 students of IIT Roorkee were expelled due to poor performance. On further investigation, it was found out that 90% of them were students who had taken admission under reserved categories.
Students had then protested against the institute which helped them to gain their seats back at the institute. However, they don’t want to have a similar situation to be created here.
Rao added that many first year students face problem in the academic sessions because of the language barrier. As JEE are available in both Hindi and English, students who have cleared the exam in Hindi medium face problem when they enter the institute as most of the instructions are taught to them in English.

To overcome this problem, the institute is planning on to create a group to provide help and support to these students. He said that efforts are being made so that students who want to learn in Hindi and teachers who can teach in Hindi can coordinate with each other to avoid problems.
Apart from this, a probation system also exists in IIT Delhi which enables students to discuss their problem with the specially assigned teachers and sort out their queries. In case a student is able to score just a shade over 5 CGPA, he/ she is placed under the probation system.
Some of the other reasons estimated for the bad performance of students is the lack of attendance. To deal with this, the institute is planning to adopt mandatory biometric attendance to monitor the attendance of students.
