Stepping in the boots of All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE), the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) is also set to close down underperforming B.Ed colleges across India. Currently, there are 1,000 teaching institutes that are under scrutiny.

The NCTE Chairperson Mr. Satbir Bedi informed media that a performance appraisal report system is going to be introduced by the council which will be helpful to do the quality checking of colleges. It will be based on various parameters including placements and quality of education. Teaching institutes that are non- compliant and are not performing well will have to face a penalty.

The chairperson informed that 1,000 institutes across the country are under scrutiny as of now. He added that no college has been listed against a single complaint. The colleges which are subjected to regular non-compliance of standard teachers training and rules are enlisted under scrutiny. Several seats in many Institutes go vacant as they fail to abide by the minimum requirements. In addition, non-satisfying number of placements will also lead an institute to be listed under scrutiny. These kinds of institutes will face rejection from students as well. NCTE is planning to close these teaching institutes permanently.

According to the reports, five lakh application for B.Ed course is received every year. However, NCTE has reported vacant seats in many B.Ed institutes. Mr. Bedi said that the teacher training institute has a capacity to train 19 lakh students every year but only 3.5 lakh jobs are generated annually.

The reason behind the vacant seats as described by a Member Secretary of NCTE, Mr. Sanjay Awasthi is the mushrooming of teaching institutest since 2008. This has resulted in oversupply eventually leading to vacant seats. Institutes which have a low percentage of placements are often not chosen by the candidates either.

Another reason behind the overflow of B.Ed applications by female candidates that it increases their matrimonial values. Mr. Bedi informed that as per his observations, he has noticed that girls with a B.Ed degree get better matrimonial prospects.

Scrutiny of teaching institutes will help in improving the quality of education and will also ensure that only those institutes which add value and have good placement records are open for admissions.
