Not all IIMs across the country have recorded a positive gender diversity for the academic session 2018-19. The premier B-Schools have failed to meet the short-term target with regard to female student enrolment. For instance, IIM Calcutta, IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Kozhikode have managed to enrol only 26% female students this year. Last year, these institutes enrolled close to 30% female students.
Apart from these three premier B-Schools, IIM Bangalore has enrolled 28% female students for the third consecutive year. IIM Indore evinced better performance by enrolling 39% female students this year.
Chairperson of Admissions at IIM Calcutta, Sumanta Basu revealed that the target of IIMs is to enroll at least 30% female students. Except for IIM Rohtak and IIM Indore, most IIMs enrolled less than 30% women students. IIM Rohtak showed outstanding performance by enrolling 50% women students this year.
One of the major reasons for the disparity in the male and female student ratio at IIMs is because the majority of students who join IIMs are from engineering colleges. Since most engineering colleges across the country have more male students than female and engineering graduates’ entrance into IIMs, the number of women students getting admission in IIMs has been declining.
IIM Kozhikode’s initiative to give more weightage to women candidates was successful last year and the institute was able to enroll 30% female students. However, the percentage has fallen to 26% this year.
Experts were of the opinion that various companies are interested in recruiting more women candidates to improve their gender diversity. In simple words, the intake of women candidates in these companies is higher than the percentage of women in IIMs.
IIM Ahmedabad has been constantly trying to improve the gender and academic diversity by introducing changes in their admission criteria. The efforts of the premier institute are successful to some extent, as the new PGP batch of 2018-20 comprises students from varied backgrounds.
On the other hand, the academic diversity of IIM Kozhikode is not up to the mark. This year, only 9% of students are from the non-engineering background.
The performance of IIM Calcutta in terms of academic diversity has improved. This year, the premier institute was able to enroll 12.53% students from the non-engineering background.
