Cape Breton University is an open research university, formerly known as the "University College of Cape Breton" (UCCB), based out of the Cape Breton Regional Municipality, Nova Scotia, Canada. It was established in 1951, and it comprises 3 major institutions namely, the Xavier Junior College, the College of Cape Breton and Nova Scotia Eastern Institute of Technology. CBU is academically affiliated with the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC), the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU), Association of Atlantic Universities (AAU), as well as the Association of Canadian Community Colleges (ACCC). Cape Breton University is ranked 67 in the country rank and 2906 in the world rank UniRanking. In the Ranking Web of Universities CBU was ranked 62 by country and 2713 in the world rank.

Infrastructure, Campus & Courses

CBU’s campus mainly features the Central Library, The Beaton Institute, an Art Gallery, Boardmore Theatre, Cape Breton Health Recreation Complex and Harriss Hall. These buildings are spread over 17000 square ft. which includes various workrooms, administrative blocks, reading rooms, and few auditoriums. The University majorly offers courses in the field of business, technology, education, liberal arts, science, and health & wellness. Some of the major subjects are Anthropology, Mathematics, Legal Studies, Dramatic literature, Information Technology, Philosophy, English, History, and Political Science. CBU is the only postsecondary degree-granting institution on Cape Breton Island. In addition to this, all Cape Breton University degree, diploma and certificate programs offer a transition-to-work option through work placements, internships, co-op education, and work-study programs. 

Accomplishments & Alumni

CBU has partnered with Grenfell to deliver the In.Business program at the campus in Corner Brook, Memorial University, making it more accessible for Indigenous students in Newfoundland and Labrador. Some of the popular Alumni out of a community of over 15000 Alumni, are Nolan Crouse, mayor of St. Albert, Alberta, David Dingwall, former Liberal politician, President of Cape Breton University, Ursula Johnson, multidisciplinary Mi'kmaq artist, Meshack Lufile, professional basketball player, Manning MacDonald, former Nova Scotia Liberal MLA Cape Breton South, and Jason Massie, a soccer player in League1 Ontario.
