The oldest institute for higher education in the United States, Harvard University came into existence in the year 1636 as a result of voting by the Great and General Court of Massachusetts Bay Colony. In the year 1638, the institute was renamed after the first benefactor of the college, John Harvard of Charlestown who left his half estate and a library for the Institution.
