History, Affiliations & Rankings

Established in 1824, the University of Manchester is the largest single-site university in the UK that has the biggest student community. The current form of the university was created only in 2004 after the unison of the University of Manchester of Science and Technology (UMIST) and the Victoria University of Manchester. With 25 Nobel Prize recipients included in the staggering alumni list of the university, it is ranked as the 27th best university in the world and 6th in the UK by QS. The Academic Ranking of World Universities places the university at the 36th position in the world and 5th in the UK.

Infrastructure, Campus & Courses

The University of Manchester offers more than 1,000-degree programmes across a diverse array of disciplines including Business, Engineering, Sciences and Humanities. It not only offers bachelor’s degrees, master’s degrees, MBAs and PhDs but also Foundation programmes to help international students meet the academic and English language requirements of the University of Manchester. All programmes offered by the University of Manchester are divided into four faculties: the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences; Faculty of Life Sciences; Faculty of Humanities; Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences. The campus stretched over an area of 27 hectares, is located on Oxford Road and is the largest campus amongst the UK higher education estates. The gigantic library of the University of Manchester holds over four million printed books, manuscripts, more than 41,000 e-journals and approx 500,000 electronic books. The library of the university is one of the five National Research Libraries

With a very high research output, the University of Manchester is a Russell Group University. 83% of research of the university was ranked as ‘internationally excellent’ and ‘world-leading by the REF (Research Excellence Framework). As per the 2019 Academic Ranking of World Universities, the University of Manchester is the 6th best university in the UK, 33rd best in the world and seventh in Europe making a place in the Top 100 Most Innovative Universities list. Being the biggest student community, the total student strength of the university goes over 40,000 students.

COVID-19 Response

At the University of Manchester, researchers, students, teachers and professional service staff are working with partners to understand COVID-19 and its implications. In order to ensure the safety of its students, the university has taken the following steps:

  • The university has moved to teach online, cancelled or postponed all on-campus events and closed all non-essential facilities.

  • It is preparing plans for students to come back to campus in phases. 

  • All induction activities will be conducted online.

  • In order to make the campus safe, the university is putting new cleaning and social distancing measures in place.

  • Students will be charged the full published tuition fees for 2020/ 2021 entry with no exceptions for online learning. 

Note: As UK Government has confirmed the restart of on-campus teaching at higher educational institutes pst May 17, 2021, further updates related to in-person teaching will be updated by the University of Manchester.  Those who are travelling to other countries from the UK after May 17th can demonstrate COVID-19 vaccination status in the digital or paper format received officially by the UK government. All visitors can show proof of taking two doses of approved vaccines on arrival at other countries.

International Scholarships at the University of Manchester

The University of Manchester offers a number of scholarship offers to its Indian students. It offers to fund more than £100,000 to Indian-domicile students for one-year master’s degree programmes at the university.


University of Manchester India Scholarship

The university offers a total of 16 scholarships across four faculty or schools.

1. Alliance Manchester Business School

Award Value: £7,500

Applicable to: Master’s programmes in -

  • Accounting and Finance
  • International Business
  • People, Management and Organisation
  • Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Policy
  • Marketing, Operations and Business Analytics

2. School of Social Sciences

No. of Awards: 1

Award Value: £5,000

Applicable to: Master’s programmes offered by the School of Social Sciences

3. School of Medical Sciences

No. of Awards: 2

Award Value: £5,000

Applicable to: Following Master’s programmes - 

  • Molecular Pathology
  • Cancer Biology and Radiotherapy Physics 
  • Clinical Immunology 
  • Clinical Biochemistry 
  • Medical Microbiology 

4. Faculty of Science and Engineering

No. of Awards: 13

Award Value: £5,000

Applicable to: Master’s programmes offered by

  • The School of Natural Sciences
  • The School of Engineering

One award of £5,000 is given to each of the following:

  • MSc Petroleum Geoscience 
  • MSc Pollution and Environmental Control  
  • MSc Advanced Computer Science 

Eligibility Criteria

  • Candidates must qualify as Indian students. 
  • Candidates must be holding either an unconditional or conditional offer by the University for Manchester. 
  • Students must also have met the entry criteria for the course of their choice. 

GREAT - The University of Manchester India Scholarship Programme

Scholarship Value:  £10,000 for the Faculty of Science and Engineering and £9,625 for the School of Social Sciences


  • The candidate must be an Indian citizen.

  • Candidates must meet the English language requirements of the university.

  • Candidates must have an offer of admission for a full-time master’s degree programme offered by either the School of Social Sciences, including Law or the Faculty of Science and Engineering.

Duration: The scholarship award is tenable for a year only and can not be deferred to a later year. 

Faculty of Science and Engineering Indian Excellence Scholarships

Scholarship Value: A total of £80,000 will be distributed amongst - 

  • Highest ranked students, who will receive an amount of £40,000 which is payable as £10,000 per year for 4 years,

  • two other students will receive £20,000 which is payable as £5,000 per year for four years.


  • Applicable for Indian students only.

  • Students must have achieved excellence in Standard XII.
