Govind Ballabh Pant University of Agriculture & Technology (GBPUAT), Pantnagar, has a reservation policy for undergraduate and postgraduate programs. Two types of reservations are implemented by GBPUAT: vertical reservation and horizontal reservation. These reservation policies are in line with government regulations, and they address caste, gender, and domicile-based representation of candidates.

GBPUAT conducts its own entrance examination for admission, which is called the GBPUAT entrance exam . However, applicants may also enroll through ICAR AIEEE or JEE Main for the undergraduate program of Agricultural Engineering. For admission to postgraduate programs, aspirants can apply through ICAR, GATE exam and JNU BIOTECH, or VCI-based selection.

Category‑Wise GBPUAT Reservation Policy

The reservation policy of GBPUAT Pantnagar is classified into Vertical and Horizontal quotas. While vertical quota is for income and caste-based reservations, the horizontal quota is for reservations based on gender, disability, domicile, or occupation. The reservation percentages of each quota are listed in the tables below:

Vertical Reservation

The percentage of seats reserved under the vertical reservation policy is listed below:

GBPUAT Reservation Policy: Vertical Quota

SC

19%

ST

4%

OBC

14%

EWS

10% more than the approved seats for undergraduate programs.

Horizontal Reservation

The percentage of seats reserved under the horizontal reservation policy is listed below:

GBPUAT Reservation Policy: Horizontal Quota

Women from the Uttarakhand State

30%

Physically Weaker Section (40% or more disability)

3%

Wards of Uttarakhand Freedom Fighters

2%

Wards of Defence Personnel

2%

Additional seats are also reserved for certain subcategories, which include international students, Kashmiri migrants and J&K residents, ICAR nominees, and children of the university employees (5%).

GBPUAT Reservation Policy for Uttarakhand Domicile Quota

Under the GBPUAT reservation policy, legal residents of Uttarakhand are given priority for admission. Other than MCA, B.Sc. Food Tech and PhD-Management, all the UG/PG-approved seats have been reserved solely for students under the state quota.  The rest of the seats are open to All-India applicants, with 85% of the seats in BTech and 50% of the seats in MCA programs reserved for Uttarakhand candidates.

Only "payment seats" ( approximately 50% of seats, such as BSc Agriculture, BTech, etc.) are available for non-domicile candidates. No horizontal quotas are applicable; instead, they are subject to vertical quotas (SC, ST, OBC, EWS). This domicile reservation policy allows priority to local students and a transparent fee-based process for external candidates.

GBPUAT Course-wise Reservation Policy

While seat distribution varies for each course, the reservation percentages remain constant for the undergraduate program. Listed below is an example from the year 2025:

  • In 2025, 130 seats are available for Uttarakhand-domiciled students, and 26 payment seats are available for the BSc (Hons) in Agriculture program.
  • Unreserved seats, OBC, SC, ST, EWS, PH, women (horizontal), orphans, J&K residents/ Kashmiri migrant wards, defence/freedom fighters wards, and payment seats for other Indian states are among the available seats.

The GBPUAT reservation policy in 2025 promotes an open and equal admissions process by integrating the preferences of Uttarakhand domicile, flexible horizontal quotas (gender, disability, and heritage), and national affirmative action (SC/ST/OBC/EWS). The process is transparent because of the well-defined eligibility and document standards and the comprehensive course-wise seat allocation.

Applicants from Uttarakhand benefit from both vertical and horizontal quotas, while applicants from other states are only permitted to use payment seat routes with vertical quotas. In broader terms, the policy maintains a balance between local representation, gender inclusion, social justice, and merit-based fairness. All these representations of candidates are important factors in higher education.
